In 2014, Yorkshire was lucky enough to host the Tour de France Grand Départ. Dynamic were asked to develop training materials for the 10,000 volunteers for the big event.
The Tour Makers had to work through three induction modules in a three week period, before being allowed to progress to the classroom based training for the event. They could complete the modules in their own time, which meant that we had to design and build our product to work on an unpredictably wide range of devices. In reality, this also meant that up to 1,000 users were accessing the course, 24 hours a day.
In true Dynamic fashion, we naturally set ourselves the challenge to deliver a rich, interactive and engaging experience which was consistent for all Tour Makers. Built in Articulate Storyline, the course utilised strong graphic design coupled with custom extension-based programming to deliver a unique and memorable training experience. For the older, less feature-rich browsers, we compiled the product to Adobe Flash, allowing for a direct replication of all the interactions.
Our analytics showed that the course was accessed in over 60 different countries, from places as far afield as Vietnam, Barbados and Nepal. The training was also accessed on everything from desktop PCs to tablets, phones and even games consoles.
With 10,000 Tour Makers completing the training, there were bound to be a few technical queries around using our customised Moodle LMS which hosted the courses. To assist with any problems, we offered first‑line helpdesk support to each and every one of the trainees, which, by the time the training programme closed, had dealt with roughly 2,000 email enquiries. This was a huge step forward for Dynamic as it was the first time we had offered direct help desk support to the end user. Needless to say, it was a great success.
