ECGs (electrocardiograms) can used for investigating a wide range of symptoms including a rapid pulse, dizziness, chest pains and epigastric pain. They can also be used to monitor patients and identify a range of potential problems, so they are an essential device for medical practitioners. And because there are some occasions when the use of ECGs is not appropriate, as well as a variety of reading to measure and accurately interpret, it means good quality training is a must.

The advantages of our elearning module on ECG interpretation

This module takes the learner through basic ECG interpretation by both explaining what the user reads on screen or paper and what that looks like using a 3D render of the heart. Taking the user through incremental stages, they learn how to analyse waveforms, what’s normal, what to look out for and importantly, when to escalate readings. The module can play a vital role in a medical practitioner’s validation, as they undertake their required hours of continuing professional development.

The importance of continuing training

Often patients can be completely asymptomatic whilst still harbouring potential complications. ECGs can also return a wide variety of different readings, so it’s vital that ECG elearning courses are not only available but also easily accessible in digestible and multiple formats.

Upon completion, users will:

be able to explain what an ECG is and why they are used

know what contraindictions there are for an ECG

have in-depth knowledge of ECG paper and the different parts of an ECG printout

have a good understanding of the ECG waveform and morphology

have a good understanding of the basic cardiac anatomy and the conduction system

be able to recognise cardiac rhythms including life threatening arrhythmias

Consequently, users who achieve these objectives will be able to confidently carry out safe and effective venepuncture and canulation procedures on patients.
