Delirium is a change in a person’s mental state that can happen suddenly over one to two days. It’s often the first sign that someone is becoming unwell, but can look different from one person to the next. In this case, we highlight our elearning module for Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, designed to help staff identify the states of delirium, diagnose and manage it.

The advantages of delirium and frailty elearning

Delirium can develop over just a couple of hours and can be prevalent in 1 to 2% of our communities. But in adults over 85, this can increase to 14%. In care homes, or post-acute care settings, this can be up to 60%. Given the prevalence of the condition, and the fact it presents in different ways, Dynamic’s delirium elearning module is perfectly suited to train many people regularly at any time, remotely on any device. The training can be revisited regularly and can form a vital part in a practitioner’s CPD.

Upon completion, users will:

be aware of the states of delirium presenting both acutely or sub-acutely in patients in hospital and the community

understand the importance of the environment for people with delirium or at high risk of delirium

know how to recognise, diagnose and manage a state of delirium or at high risk of delirium

understand the differences between delirium and dementia

Consequently, users who achieve these objectives will confidently identify the differences between delirium and dementia whilst having a better understanding .

Contextualising theory with practice

We included case studies and subsequent quizzes within our Delirium elearning module to connect abstract concepts to real-world situations, helping learners to understand how the condition manifests in diverse patient scenarios. This not helps put theory into practice, it enhances engagement, builds critical thinking and promotes empathy and patient-centred care. Not only that, within the context of an elearning module this encourages the application of guidelines, facilitates self assessment and provides a safe environment for repeated learning.
