When a patient presents with a burn, it’s really important to know how it was caused and the appropriate first aid measures staff need to take. Not only that, first aiders need to act quickly, so it’s essential that staff keep up to date with their knowledge. In this case we highlight our work, demonstrating our ‘Burns: Aetiology of burn injuries and first aid’ module for Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

The advantages of our burns elearning module

Dealing with a burns patient quickly and effectively is vital. So it’s just as important for staff to stay up to date to deal with such cases. Our modules are designed to be quick, engaging and impactful materials that not only impart essential information, but also play an important role as part of a medical practitioner’s validation, as they undertake their required hours of continuing professional development, relevant to their scope of practice.

The importance of knowing how burns were caused

There are a few reasons why medical staff need to know how burn injuries are caused. These include offering an indication of the potential severity or complexity of an injury, what first aid measures need to be taken and what further treatment might be required. This module covers those reasons, explores different causes of burns and subsequent measures that staff should take.

Upon completion, users will:

understand the different categories of burn injuries

learn how the aetiology of a burn injury can influence burn wound management

understand what first aid treatment options are available or appropriate

know how to apply first aid measures according to the mechanism of the injury

Consequently, users who achieve these objectives will be able to confidently provide safe and effective treatment to patients presenting with burns.
