Adult Basic Life support elearning that makes a difference, in so many ways
Cleveland Clinic London works in collaboration with Dynamic to create vital life support elearning, available to all internal London caregivers.

Fewer than 1 in 10 people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest
That could be someone’s parent, partner, friend or child. And knowing that really brings home the importance of helping more people become not only confident, but equipped to help save that person’s life.
This was the mission that Matt Denney, a Resuscitation Nurse Specialist from Cleveland Clinic London, came to Dynamic with; to develop a one-of-a-kind elearning resource that puts the learner at the heart of the action.
Background
As part of one of the world’s most respected academic medical centres, Cleveland Clinic London offers access to a global network of physicians and specialists, providing patients with high-quality, integrated care, enabled by technology.
The challenge
Cleveland Clinic London needed a digital solution to replace their existing training. Why? The existing training:

was delivered face-to-face

was limited to a maximum 12 people per session

lasted over four hours

This equated to approximately 130 hours. That’s nearly 8,000 minutes of frontline healthcare staff being taken away from vital clinical duties.
And with an ever-growing audience of over 350, Cleveland Clinic London needed a training answer to this problem that enabled caregivers to benefit from the same high-quality training, without leaving the clinical environment. All at a time, place—and pace that suits them.

How we solved that challenge
Replacing the four and half hour’s face-to-face training, our one-hour life support elearning module covers the essential techniques and procedures, including:

the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

how to use a bag valve mask

recognition and management of anaphylaxis

the technique for chest compressions

the head tilt/chin lift and jaw thrust manoeuvres

how to help a choking patient

When caregivers have completed this, they then arrange a 15-minute face-to-face skill assessment. When possible, these sessions are provided in the main hospital building to limit individual’s time away from their clinical role to as short as possible.

LEARNER FEEDBACK
“The e-learning module was very helpful and straightforward. It made the practical session a lot easier to do.”
Cleveland Clinic London can now deliver its vital training:

conveniently, to more people on any device

to an unlimited amount of people

having reduced seat time by 75%
Making life support elearning human-centred
This life support elearning evokes realism by placing caregivers at the heart of decision-making through a realistic video scenario.
It was important to minimise the use of a training manikin and show the scenario in a real clinical setting to add to the realism and enable to learners to really see themselves in the scenario.
The video scenario uses gamification to help bring some realism to the training. Learners can test their knowledge and understanding in a safe environment, without the fear of making a mistake, and are rewarded for speedy and accurate responses, mirroring the quick thinking, accuracy and calmness needed for the real-life situation.
