Given the increasing demand for eye care services and the crucial role nurses play in early diagnosis and patient management, it’s essential they have a strong foundational knowledge of common ophthalmic conditions.

This programme aims to enhance their confidence and competence in recognising, understanding, and managing key eye diseases, ultimately improving patient care and outcomes. The course comprises of nine modules, each focusing on a different anatomical area of the eye and the most frequently encountered conditions associated with it.

The advantages of our opthalmology CPD programme

This opthalmology elearning programme offers a flexible, accessible and engaging approach to CPD, enabling nursing staff to enhance their ophthalmic knowledge at their own pace and convenience.

By breaking down complex topics into structured, easy-to-digest modules, the programme supports progressive learning in tandem with practical application and observation-based validation. The use of interaction and creative media enriches the learning experience, reinforcing key concepts and aiding retention.

Additionally, the programme’s focus on real-world clinical scenarios ensures the knowledge gained is directly applicable to practice, enabling nurses to confidently contribute to the management of common ophthalmic conditions by fostering more informed and proactive nursing care.

The importance of opthalmic CPD for nurses

A strong understanding of ophthalmic conditions is crucial for nurses, as early recognition and timely intervention can significantly improve patient outcomes.

For example, acute angle-closure glaucoma is an ophthalmic emergency that can lead to permanent loss of vision if not identified and treated promptly. Patients may present with symptoms such as severe eye pain, headache, nausea and blurred vision—symptoms that could be mistaken for other conditions.

A well-trained nurse who recognises these warning signs can play a vital role in ensuring rapid referral and initiation of treatment. By equipping nurses with the knowledge to identify and respond to such conditions effectively, this elearning programme contributes to improved patient safety and enhanced multidisciplinary care.

Upon completion, users will be able to:

identify and explain the anatomy and physiology—and the common pathology and pharmacology—of the cornea and sclera

explain which diagnostic tools are used in the mapping of corneal disease and injury

explain how glaucoma is assessed, the significance of intraocular pressure and the methods of its measurement

explain the physiology of glaucoma and what its different classifications are

explain when a corneal transplant might be a necessary treatment, what the different transplantation types are and how they are managed

explain what surgeries, including corneal refractive surgery are associated with the cornea and what the basic principles are

explain what medications are used to treat glaucoma and identify the potential issues pertaining to compliance

identify and explain the anatomy and physiology of the retina, macula and the vitreous—and how we assess the health of the optic disc

explain what the different types of retinal detachment are, including their signs and symptoms and appropriate treatment options

explain what diabetic retinopathy is, its stages and how it needs to be managed

explain the anatomy and physiology of the eyelids and explain the symptoms causes and treatment principles of the most commonly encountered diseases and conditions of the eyelids

explain what diagnostic tools are used to assess the health of the retina and determine a suitable plan

explain the anatomical and physiological makeup of the orbit and its surrounding musculature and cranial bones

identify the most common diseases and conditions associated with the orbit

Consequently, users who achieve these objectives will be able to confidently assess a number of conditions and diseases associated with with eyes, sockets and eyelids, whilst having knowledge of the correct treatments for each.
