This cardiac care elearning programme has been developed for a UK NHS Trust to support the continuing professional development (CPD) of nursing staff.

Cardiovascular disease remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the UK, and nurses play a pivotal role in its prevention, early detection, and management. By strengthening their understanding of common cardiac conditions and interventions, this programme enhances nurses’ confidence and clinical decision-making, ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of care.

Mockup

The advantages of cardiac care elearning

This cardiac cardiac care elearning programme provides a flexible and engaging way for nurses to develop their expertise, learning at their own pace. By structuring the content into focused modules, the programme supports progressive learning and ensures suitability to both experienced nurses and those new to cardiac care.

The use of engaging interaction and creative media, such as illustrations, videos, as well as clinical scenarios, simplifies complex concepts and reinforces key learning points. Importantly, the programme links theoretical knowledge to everyday practice, equipping nurses with the skills to confidently assess, manage and support patients with cardiac conditions.

A strong understanding, more effective cardiac care

A strong knowledge of cardiac conditions is essential for nurses, as the early recognition of warning signs can be lifesaving. For example, a patient experiencing an ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) requires immediate intervention to restore blood flow to the heart and prevent serious complications. Nurses are often the first to assess patients presenting with chest pain, and their ability to quickly identify symptoms, such as radiating pain, shortness of breath and abnormal ECG changes, can significantly impact the speed of treatment. Prompt recognition and escalation of care in cardiac emergencies is vital in ensuring the timely administration of life-saving interventions, such as thrombolysis or an emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

By equipping nurses with the knowledge to detect and respond to such critical situations, this elearning programme directly supports improved patient outcomes through high standards of effective cardiac care.

Illustration of heart for cardiac care elearning module

Upon completion, users will be able to:

explain what CHD is and the main pathophysiological process that cause it

explain what the different types of acute coronary syndromes are and how those are diagnosed

understand the the principles of different types of cardiac surgery and some of the alternative treatments to open heart surgery

understand the reasons for offering patients cardiac surgery

explain what the different pathways are and what those involve

demonstrate an understanding of the role of cardiac rehabilitation in the treatment and management of CHD

understand the pre-operative tests and post-operative care that patients require

understand some of the potential complications following cardiac surgery

explain what a heart transplant is, what patients it might be necessary and suitable for and what the different waiting lists are

explain what the different types of organ donation are and how donor organs are transported and cared for

explain what a heart transplant procedure involves and what pre- and post-operative care is required during a patient's stay in hospital

explain what education and long-term management advice needs to be provided to the patient, including the potential complications to look out for

Consequently users who achieve these objectives will be able to confidently assess a number of conditions and diseases associated with the heart , whilst having knowledge of the correct treatments for each.
